While Europeans are praying that their gas-generated heat will keep them warm this coming winter, the Middle East is already pretty hot, courtesy of our friendly Middle-Eastern neighbors. Ahmadinejad announced to the world yesterday from Brazil, that the threat of a possible military strike against Iran's nuclear installations was no longer relevant. He brazenly declared that western powers "no longer have the courage" to strike. (That sounds like quite a challenge, if I ever heard one.)
Ahmadinejad, as part of a five-country tour, met with the Brazilian President, whom President Obama called "the most popular politican on earth." Iran has strengthened relations with many Latin American countries in the past few years, providing financial aid and equipment, and hopes to increase trade. Brazil, on its part, is looking for a piece of the action in the Middle East. It hopes to serve as mediator and negotiator, an alternating role played mostly by the U.S. and more recently Germany, Turkey and the E.U. (Brazil hosted a number of Israeli officials in the past month, President Peres amongst them.)
Let's hope someone does shut off the gas before it gets too hot.
